You’re in the market for a Tiffany Lamp but all you can find is Tiffany Style Lamps and you want to know what the difference is. Here is an overview of what a Tiffany Lamp is and what sets them apart from other lamps, especially Tiffany Style lamps.

A Tiffany lamp is an authentic lamp designed and made by Tiffany Studios. Each of these lamps manufactured between 1896 and 1933 included a metal stamp on the inside, lower brim of the lamp shade that had “TIFFANY STUDIOS” written on it. Many Tiffany lamps were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, though some were designed by Clara Driscoll.

Tiffany lamps are famous for two distinct features: their beauty and quality. Never before had anyone taken the beauty of stained glass windows and applied it to an indoor lighting source. Louis Comfort Tiffany had designed many stained glass windows and was a lover of gardening and nature. Tiffany’s goal was to bring the art forms that he loved so much into every home.

Most of Tiffany’s designs consisted of visions of nature such as flowers, insects, trees and landscapes. Tiffany lamps used chemically colored glass that was cut into specific shapes to create colorful puzzles of shimmering light. Some of Tiffany’s designs like the Wisteria are so life-like that when you look at it; you wish you could curl up under its draping branches.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of Charles Louis Tiffany, the owner of Tiffany & Co. the world-renown jewelry store. Quality was something Louis grew up with and was accustomed to.  So when he began designing lamps he insisted on nothing but the best.

Tiffany saw to it that each lamp was carefully crafted from the first cut of glass to the molding and shaping of the bronze bases.

The Copper Foil Method, where each piece of glass is wrapped with a thin strip of copper foil then placed on the lamp mold and soldered. Once each and every piece of glass has been wrapped with the copper each piece is soldered together, welding a solid wire frame that encases each piece of glass. This method ensured that the glass did not move around or slip out. An authentic Tiffany lamp, though made of glass is extremely difficult to damage through normal use or even moving.

Most lamps that are manufactured today do not go through the careful construction that Tiffany lamps underwent. Each Tiffany lamp was hand made by a worker under Louis Comfort Tiffany’s supervision. Today’s manufacturing processes simply do not go through the checks and balances that they underwent during the turn of the 20th Century.
